The award is the fifth time Audi has won the World Performance Car title
The 18th World Car Awards have been held in New York, with the Audi e-tron GT being awarded the title of World Performance Car. Audi is the most successful manufacturer in the history of these prestigious awards, having won no less than 11 World Car titles since the award’s inception.
In its debut year, the brand’s flagship electric Grand Tourer was a finalist in three categories – World Electric Vehicle of the Year, World Performance Car, and World Car Design of the Year – its win as World Performance Car is the fifth time an Audi has won in this category, with the Audi RS 4 winning in 2007 and the Audi R8 winning on three separate occasions.
“We’re happy that the fully electric Audi e-tron GT quattro was a finalist in three categories only a year after its world premiere,” said Oliver Hoffmann, Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development, after the awards program. "The fact that the Audi e-tron GT quattro takes the title of "World Performance Car" and thus this award goes to Audi for the fifth time makes us particularly proud, of course. The Audi e-tron GT quattro proves that electric mobility can be sustainable, dynamic, and fascinating all at once. That’s why it is an important part of our commitment to electric mobility.”
The largest and most prestigious new car awards in the world, they are voted on by an international panel of 100 automotive journalists who thoroughly test each of the qualifying vehicles. Audi’s record stands unchallenged, having previously won the category World Car Design of the Year with the Audi TT in 2007 and R8 in 2008, as well as the World Luxury Car award in 2018 and 2019 with the Audi A8 and A7 Sportback respectively. In 2005 and 2014, Audi also won the overall award – World Car of the Year with the Audi A6 and A3 respectively in addition to the now five, World Performance Car titles.
The winning Audi e-tron GT was only unveiled internationally last year heralding in new era for the brand as it increases its all-electric offering across the board. The e-trron GT represents an exciting face of e-mobility for the future, with its stunning designed more than matched by extraordinary performance while producing zero emissions. Even the manufacture of the car is sustainable and eco-friendly, produced as it is at the Böllinger Höfe site which is net carbon neutral. The newly crowned World Performance Car and its RS sibling – the RS e-tron GT – will arrive in Australia from September this year.
