Nico Hülkenberg is named as Audi’s first Formula 1 driver.

Audi Sport has confirmed its first driver for the brand’s Formula 1 entry in 2026, with German Nico Hülkenberg set to drive for the four rings.

While speculation has been rife on the Formula 1 paddock about who would drive for Audi come 2026, at least half of that speculation can now be put to bed with Nico Hülkenberg confirmed as the first Audi driver.

The German driver, competing for Haas in the currently F1 season, has signed a multi-year contract with Sauber which will see him driving for Sauber next year (Stake F1 team KICK Sauber) before starting for the Audi factory team in 2026. The announcement follows hot on the heels of Audi’s full acquisition of Sauber which was announced in March.

“The signing of Nico is the next milestone for the Audi Formula 1 project,” says says Andreas Seidl, CEO of the future Audi F1 factory team.

“With his speed, his experience and his dedicated teamwork, he will make an important contribution to Audi’s entry in 2026 as early as next year,” he says.

For the 37-year-old who started in F1 in 2010, joining the new Audi team is a perfect fit.

With more than 200 grand prix under his belt, Hülkenberg brings a wealth of experience to the team

With more than 200 grand prix under his belt, Hülkenberg brings a wealth of experience to the team. His reputation for hard work and a no nonsense approach are well known and although he has yet to record a grand prix victory, he is considered an extremely talented driver who counts a 24 Hours of Le Mans victory on debut amongst other career highlights.

“Right from the start, there was great mutual interest in tackling a project of this uniqueness together,” says Andreas Seidl.

“Nico is a strong personality, his determination and desire on a professional and personal level will help us to make progress both in the development of the car and in building up the team.”

In addition to his impressive driving ability, Hülkenberg’s experience will be invaluable in the development o the Audi team and the development of the team and cars. As well as his commitments for the (Stake F1 team KICK Sauber )during next year’s season, Hülkenberg will also be closely involved in the development of Audi’s first Formula 1 car ahead of the start of the 2026 season.
